Campaign for the Peace of Youth

The ” barrel gunpowder ” designation is increasingly marking the Balkans, the former hot peninsula, due to conflicts and wars. The phrase that was attached to the geographic territory ” mischief ” of nearly 550 thousand square kilometers has almost disappeared from the political discourse, literary or media discourse. The atmosphere of peace among the nations of this region, combining ethnicity, religion and different cultures, has left the old virtues under a strong armor. Today we have an atmosphere of peace and interaction, even though we
disagree with everything. Read more

Marking 100 years since the end of the First World War and 80 years since the publication of Three Guineas, the 28th Annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf invites papers addressing the dual theme of Europe and Peace. From the ‘prying’, ‘insidious’ ‘fingers of the European War’ that Septimus Warren Smith would never be free of in Mrs Dalloway to Woolf’s call to ‘think peace into existence’ during the Blitz in ‘Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid’, questions of war and peace pervade her writings. They are also central to Woolf’s Bloomsbury circle, exemplified in John Maynard Keynes’ The Economic Consequences of the Peace, Clive Bell’s Peace at Once and Leonard Woolf’s Quack, Quack! While seeking proposals that address the European contexts and cultures of modernism between wars, we also encourage exploration of how these writings can help us think through what it might mean to create peace in Europe today amid various political, humanitarian, economic and environmental crises. Topics may include, but are not limited to: Read more

Countering Hate Speech and Radicalism

Deadline: 31 January 2018
Open to: applicants with some knowledge of the issues of hate speech and far-right radicalism
Costs: fully funded

Description

In recent years, the increase of hate speech throughout Europe has contributed to electoral victories of nationalist parties and the radicalization of far-right movements, fueling hate crimes and violence towards marginalized groups. From forcible evictions of Roma people to stigmatization and attacks of LGBTQI+ and minority faith communities, the hate narrative gradually weakened the social cohesion between communities. Besides, it challenged democracy, equality and the rule of law across the continent. The current political framing, shaped by hate speech and far-right proponents, led national governments to make policy choices that often restrain fundamental rights of people in Europe. As illiberal democracies seem to be on the rise, we are once again moving into a period of strengthening domestic positions through demonizing minority groups, undermining the conditions for transnational, open and democratic societies to thrive. To counteract those trends, European Alternatives is looking for activists and citizens from Central and Eastern Europe willing to stand against those trends and to organize for open societies. Think Like a 21st Century Economist

Economics matters enormously for the future, but its fundamental ideas are centuries out of date.

No one can deny it: economics matters. Its theories are the mother tongue of public policy, the rationale for multi-billion-dollar investments, and the tools used to tackle global poverty and manage our planetary home. Pity then that its fundamental ideas are centuries out of date yet still dominate decision-making for the future. Read more
